BOXING HIGHLIGHTS - FITNESS / FUNDAMENTALS

Info on BOXING for fitness - and BOXING for the right fundamentals.

BOXING FOR THE RIGHT FUNDAMENTALS...

First and foremost is foot work. Being able to step, slide, evade, all start with proper foot work.

Proper foot work puts you in position to move and counter and allows you to deliver punches with the most economy of motion and energy. Second is head movement, which keeps your eyes in the proper position, allows you to roll with punches that do hit, trains you to move your head “off the center line” to take some effectiveness away from the opponents punch, and since the head leads the body, that head movement also sets up footwork. Next you have your posture. Your defensive stance. As a beginner, you will get fatigued, and your hands will drop. When that happens, you will be unable to properly defend yourself, and get your head punched. Posture will train your muscles to be able to keep your hands in place and offer protection to your body, as well as already having your hands in the proper position to throw the most effective punches. With practice you will learn the most effective way to move your body to avoid every punch you will have to face. Lastly is punching and timing. There are a million ways to throw a jab, but only two or three proper ways. The definition of that breaks down to the speed, accuracy, and energy expended in the effort. Using the hip twist, leg extension, and joint lock out at extension, as well as striking the target in the sweet spot for distance are all things that only come though practice and grounding in those basic fundamentals.

BOXING FOR FITNESS...

Boxing can easily burn as much as 500 calories per session. Boxing however, has an additional benefit thanks to the fact that it is high intensity training. You see, when performing high intensity training, you not only burn heaps of calories during the session, but for hours after the training session has ended. Typical cardio activities do not have this post training calorie burning effect. Hence, boxing is your best friend when it comes to losing weight.
